Mr. William Stephen Wall, Sr., 87 of Blackshear, passed away Sunday morning, June 27, 2021, while at his vacation home in Cashiers, NC.
Born in Blackshear, GA on December 11, 1933, he had lived in Pierce County all his life. At the young age of 11 he started working in the grocery business delivering groceries on his bicycle. While in high school, he excelled in sports lettering all four years in Basketball, Football, and Baseball all while working at Davis Grocery as a meat cutter. He would go on to graduate from Blackshear High School in 1953 and attended college for a year before coming home and working at Carl Johnson’s Feed Store. It was 1955 when several life changing events took place for Mr. Wall. He married the love of his life, Ann Colley Wall, went to work for his new father-in-law at Colley’s Grocery, and by the end of the year became a proud new father. Over the years, that little grocery store would grow to become Wall’s IGA where it is still a thriving grocery store in our community. Mr. Wall, even at the age of 87, was still opening up the store and waiting on customers every morning. He was also the former owner of the IGA in Ludowici.
The grocery business wasn’t the only business venture Mr. Wall was involved in. In the late ‘60’s he started the United Market Convenience Store and just recently built their new location on Highway 84 East. He and his family also started the Comfort Inn in Blackshear.
Mr. Wall had been a member of several business related organizations as well as civic organizations over the years such as The Jaycee’s, the Blackshear City Council for which he had served for many years, the Pierce County Chamber of Commerce, The Pierce County Industrial Authority for which he had been a board member, The Peoples Bank where he had been on the Board of Directors, and several Supper Clubs. Over the years, Mr. Wall was very honored to have received numerous awards from the community he loved and worked in. He was a very hard worker with a strong work ethic but he did take time to enjoy life with his family by traveling and having big family get-togethers. He had also enjoyed playing golf and fishing in his younger days. Mr. Wall was a member of First Baptist Church.
He was a son of the late Durward & Vera Lee Bowen Wall. He was also preceded in death by a son, David Wall; his brother, N. Edward Wall; and by his brother-in-law, Jake Popham.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Ann Colley Wall of Blackshear; his daughter and son-in-law, Debbie & Roy Gilleon of Blackshear; his son and daughter-in-law, William S. “Bill” & Peggy Wall, Jr. of Blackshear; and daughter-in-law, Dawn Wall of Blackshear; his sister, Vera Sue Popham of Blackshear; 7 grandchildren, Candi (Matt) Lee, Shannon (Alison) Gilleon, Stephen Wall, Stuart (Courtney) Wall, David “D.J.” Wall, Jr., Logan Wall, and Kirby Wall; 7 great grandchildren, Caleb Gilleon, Thomas Lee, Hannah Gilleon, Mattie Lee, Micah Gilleon, Jack Wall, and Lincoln Wall; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
