Mr. Nathaniel Preston “Jr.” Kirkland, Jr., 93 of Blackshear, passed away Monday, August 17, 2020, at Harborview – Pierce County.
Born in Savannah, GA on December 3, 1926, he had lived in Pierce County most of his life. Mr. Kirkland had worked at the Pierce Shoe Factory for several years as a shipping foreman. He had also sold plants and flowers at his home greenhouse and was known by many as “The Flower Man”. He and his wife, Thelma, used to sing on Sunday mornings at the radio station during their Sunday morning broadcast. He was a member of the Blackshear Church of God where he sang many specials over the years as well as having sung at funerals and for birthdays. One of his favorite things to do was to witness to people and spread the love of Jesus.
He was a son of the late Nathaniel Preston & Ida Marie Joyner Kirkland, Sr. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Betty Wynn; and by two brothers, Albert Kirkland and Bill Kirkland.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Delane Strickland Kirkland of Blackshear; his daughter and son-in-law, Loretta & Roger Smith of Douglasville, GA; his son and daughter-in-law, Foy & LaFain Kirkland of Blackshear; a brother, Charles (Peggy) Kirkland of Blackshear; 3 grandchildren, Stephanie (Jerry) Evans, Holly (Gerry) Willits, and Brandy Wynn; 6 great grandchildren; 3 great, great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Due to COVID-19, the family will have a private funeral service on Thursday, August 20, 2020.
Interment will be in the Waters Cemetery.
