Mrs. Martha Janie Crump Thornton, 85 of Bristol, passed away Friday, April 15, 2022, at Harborview – Pierce County.
Born in Ellijay, GA on July 30, 1936, she had lived in Pierce County most of her life. Mrs. Thornton was a homemaker for the last several years of her life but in her earlier years had worked for Mama Grace’s Daycare followed by Tyre Pest Control where she had been the secretary. She enjoyed being outside working in her yard and was a good cook who loved to feed her babies. Traveling – especially to the mountains – and riding motorcycles with her husband were things she also enjoyed. Mrs. Thornton was a member of Bristol Baptist Church where she was in the Ladies Sunday school as well as a former adult choir member.
She was a daughter of the late Hershell Charles & Lillie May Shoemake Crump. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Tommie Thornton; three sons, James Randy Thornton, Robert Doyle Thornton, and Dennis Rory Thornton; a great granddaughter, Angela Thornton; and her brother-in-law, Jake Tyre.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky & Cathy Thornton of Cochran and Darren & Debbie Thornton of Mershon; her sister, Mary Tyre of Waycross; three sisters-in-law, Eleanor Thornton and Helen Lee both of Bristol and Hazel (Sonny) Bowen of Dublin; a brother-in-law, T. J. (Rocia) Thornton of Crystal River, FL; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 3 great, great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services for Mrs. Thornton will be held Tuesday morning, April 19, 2022, at 11:00 o’clock from the Bristol Baptist Church with Rev. Brett Howell and Rev. R. C. James officiating.
Interment will be in the Bristol Cemetery.
Visitation for Mrs. Thornton will be held Tuesday morning, April 19, 2022, from 10 until 11 at the church.
