Margie James Obituary

Margie Marie Mizell James, 81, passed away Sunday, September 26, 2021, at her home in Waverly after an extended illness.

Born August 12, 1940 in Folkston, she was the daughter of the late John T. Mizell and Myrtice Harrelson Mizell. She was also preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband Larry K. James, and her son-in-law Todd Hendry.

She graduated from Waycross High School in 1958 where she was a star basketball player, once scoring 42 points in a game.  She was a Registered Nurse receiving her degree from Orangeburg Regional School of Nursing, Orangeburg, SC, in 1962.  She worked as Director of Nursing Services at Rest-A-While Nursing Home in Jesup, where she acquired her Nursing Home Administrators License. She joined the public health department in 1972 working in various capacities.  She worked at Southeast Health District in Waycross for 27 years where she acquired her Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Degree and functioned as the Women’s Health Coordinator.  She transferred to the Coastal Health District in Brunswick as Women’s Health Coordinator where she retired in 2001.  She was a member of Blackshear First United Methodist Church.

Besides playing basketball, she enjoyed playing softball, barrel racing, doing woodworking crafts, needlecrafts including cross-stitching and crocheting.

She and her husband were of the adventurous spirit and could never stay with one activity for long. They owned horses for a few years and were members of the Wayne County Saddle Club. After he received his private pilot license, they would spend weekends flying to various locations. Later they bought a sailboat and would spend weekends on the water. They bought an RV and would take trips to the beach, mountains, and Washington, DC.  They loved salt-water fishing and were members of the Hickory Bluff Boating Club.

Survivors include her son, Greg James, Plant City, FL, her daughter, Camille Hendry, Brunswick, three grandsons, Chris (Jessica Lewis) Crews, Phillip (Kimmy) Hendry, and Austin James; great-granddaughters, Savannah Hendry and Bonnie Hendry (due to arrive in December), sister Barbara (Bobbie) Waters, Nicholls, GA, brother-in-law Harvey (Joyce) James, Blackshear, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
