Mr. Joseph William DeMember, 81 of Blackshear, passed away Friday morning, February 25, 2022, at Memorial Satilla Health.
Born in Elmira, NY on March 2, 1940, he had lived in Waycross from 2004-2006 then he moved to Pierce County in 2006. Over the years, Mr. DeMember has had many occupational achievements. Beginning back in his pre-law days where he had worked as a foreman in an upstate New York tanning firm, he was a maintenance worker in a chick hatchery, he even worked as a maintenance worker for the county road department where he was living. He was also in the Army starting the year of 1963. However, Mr. DeMember did not stop there he went on to be the Assistant Attorney General, Assistant State Attorney in 1970-1973. In 1971 he was admitted to all state courts in Florida US. District court of Appeals, Northern District, U.S. Circuit court of appeals, 5th Circuit. In 1972-1975 he worked with a Private Law Practice. During this time, he was a member of a Masonic lodge in Madison, Florida. 1975-1981 He was the County Court Judge for Gilchrist County, Florida. Then 1995-1998 he became the Senior Attorney for the Florida Department of Insurance. In 1998 he became the Senior Attorney.
After his years in Law, he went on to doing other things such as, he worked as a Legal Assistant for Mike Bennett in Nashville Ga. 1998-1999. Then in February 1999- May 2000 He was the Personal Property Appraiser for Berrien County Georgia Board of Tax, but in May 2000 he would go on to become the Chief Appraiser for Lanier County Commissioners before he moved to Waycross 2006. While here, he became a member of a Masonic lodge in Blackshear. Before retiring Mr. DeMember worked for Pierce County Tax Assessors office as the Field Appraiser. Mr. DeMember spent most his retirement farming, which he loved to do. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Waycross.
He was a son of the late Patrick Michael & Harriete Trask DeMember. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Jackie Welpe, and his brother, Gary McAlister.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Binatac DeMember of Blackshear; two daughters, Susan (George) Moorehead of Ocala, FL and Renee (Suku) Baskoran of Jacksonville, FL; three sons, Patrick Michael DeMember of Blackshear and Joey DeMember and Caleb DeMember both of Valdosta; a sister, Patricia L’Herron (husband, Dave Ridenour) of Virginia; a sister-in-law, June McAlister of Melbourne, FL; 5 grandchildren, Holly (Chris) Fowler, Sue-L (Eric) Cohen, Miles Baskaran, Trevor Baskaran, and Cray Baskaran; 9 great grandchildren, Joshua, Zoe, Zellie, Stella, Zadie, Ezekiel, Cecilia Jo, Eddi Amelia, and Scarlett; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A memorial service for Mr. DeMember will be held Wednesday afternoon, March 2, 2022 – his 82nd birthday – at 4 o’clock from the Pearson-Dial Chapel with military honors and masonic rites.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to service.
Memorialization will be by cremation.
