John Thomas Smith, Jr.

May 3, 1952 ~ August 20, 2021 (age 69)


Mr. John Thomas Smith, Jr., 69 of Offerman, GA relinquished his life and returned his soul to God, on Friday afternoon, August 20, 2021.

Born in Benton, AR on May 3, 1952, John lived and worked in Glynn and Pierce Counties since the early 1990s.  He was employed by Ryan-Walsh & Wallenius-Wilhelmsen, international shipping carrier companies where he worked as a stevedore.  John was adept at building, woodworking, and gardening. He was a heavy equipment operator, farmer, and rancher with numerous life skills he imparted to local youth.  John was an all-around self-sufficient, well-informed Citizen with an ingrained patriotic spirit. He loved his country having valiantly served two tours in The Vietnam War.  He was the recipient of four Bronze Stars emblazoned on the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Medal, as well as other military awards and honors, including the Army Expert Marksmanship Award.  He appreciated a good fishing spot, sailing, writing poetry, and singing. John had a beautiful baritone voice which he always sung on key.  His love for family, friends, and critters led him to provide for many dogs, horses, cats, and wild birds. His love for animals is widely known.

John was the son of the late John Thomas & Margie Juanita Wheatley Smith, Sr.  Being raised in a large Christian family, John was a kind, dedicated, caring, and selfless man who would give you the shirt off of his back.  He was a member of Fairplay Missionary Baptist Church.  John will be remembered for his love of life and family and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors to cherish his love and memory include his life partner of thirty years and love of his life, Linda A. Chancey of Offerman,  two sons, Joshua John Smith of Medical Lake, WA and Elijah Chancey of Patterson; his three sisters, Willie Sullivan of Clinton, AR, Sharon (Tommy) Vanderford of Benton, AR, and Sheila Doney of Clinton, AR; five brothers, Dave (Pat) Smith and Richard (Peggy) Smith all of Clinton, AR and Gary (Leslie) Smith, Keith (Lois) Smith and Douglas (Tracy) Smith all of Benton, AR; 2 grandchildren, Gabriel Thomas Smith and Matthew Jacob Smith; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and associates.

Graveside services for John will be held Saturday, August 28, 2021, at 2:00 o’clock from the Fairplay Cemetery in Benton, Arkansas.

The family will have a Celebration of Life Memorial Service to honor John in Offerman on August 20, 2022.  The details will be announced closer to time for the service.
