Mrs. Janice Amanda Powell Smith, 81, of Blackshear, passed away Thursday afternoon, July 20, 2023.
Born in Douglas, GA on May 18, 1942, she had lived in Pierce County most of her life. Mrs. Smith was a 1960 graduate of Coffee County High School. She would go on to attend South Georgia College in Douglas before transferring to the University of Georgia where she received her degree in Home Economics. Her love of interior decorating led her and her friend, the late Anne Dixon, to open The Basket Barn which they ran for several years. Mrs. Smith would later join her husband’s business, Smith’s Pharmacy, by offering home interiors and gifts. She had been a homemaker for the past several years. Mrs. Smith loved raising her children and traveling. She was a great cook and had enjoyed playing golf and bridge in her younger days. She was a member of the Blackshear First United Methodist Church.
She was a daughter of the late Roy & Christine Callan Powell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ashley Al Smith; a daughter, Camilla Smith; and a son, Barry Smith.
Survivors include her daughter, Amanda (Stevie) Young of Blackshear; a son, Brian (Shawn) Smith of Blackshear; her daughter-in-law, Carri Smith of Mershon; a sister, Jean (Al) Stone of Thomasville; two brothers, Dr. Roy (Kay) Powell, Jr. of Macon and Kenny (Donna) Powell of Douglas; 6 grandchildren, Callan Smith (Felipe Cruz), Parker Smith, Claire Naylor, Addison Smith, Jackson Smith, and Justin Smith; 2 great grandchildren, Camilla Cruz-Smith and Lazarus Cruz-Smith; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A memorial service for Mrs. Smith will be held Sunday afternoon, July 23, 2023, at 3:00 o’clock from the Pearson-Dial Chapel with Rev. Mary Ann Braswell officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home chapel one hour prior to the service.
Entombment will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery.
