James Spivey Obituary

MMCM James Leroy “J.L.” Spivey, USN (Retired), 80 of Blackshear, passed away Wednesday evening, September 30, 2020, at his residence.

Born in Argyle, GA on August 20, 1940, he had lived all over the country while serving in the US Navy but had lived in Pierce County for the last several years.  Mr. Spivey retired from the US Navy after 30 years of service as a Master Chief.  Following his retirement from the Navy, he went on to graduate from Okefenokee Technical Institute with a degree in Heating and Air Condition Repair and then went to work for the college.  Mr. Spivey had owned and operated the Hungry Hunter Restaurant in Patterson for many years.  He loved to cook and made the best homemade bbq sauce!  He was also a great biscuit maker and even won the Biscuit Competition for the Pecan Festival several years in a row.  He was a member and past Master of the Blackshear Masonic Lodge #270 F & AM.  Over the years he had been very active in all facets of the Lodge.  In his spare time you could find him playing Solitaire on his phone.  Mr. Spivey was dearly loved by his family and will be greatly missed.

He was a son of the late Harley & Otis Davis Spivey.  He was also preceded in death by a great grandchild, Kyler Brown; a sister, Wanda Steedley; and by all four of his brothers, Alvin Spivey, Harvey Spivey, Carl “Buddy” Spivey, and Ronnie Spivey.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Linda Gill Spivey of Blackshear; three daughters, Sherry Dryden (Dale Stephens) and Stacey (Jesse) Jones all of Blackshear and Michelle (Barry) Kirby of Cincinnati, OH; three sons, Jimmy (Pat) Spivey of Kenosha, WI, Bo (T.J.) Jewell of Patterson, and Scott (Julieann) Jewell of Alma; his sister, Viretha Moore of Willacoochee, GA; 20 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
