Born in Blackshear, GA on April 29, 1953, he had lived in Pierce County all his life.  Mr. Howell was a 1971 graduate of Blackshear High School.  He had farmed and had also worked for the former Harrison Tractor Company for a couple of years prior to going to work for CSX Transportation as a diesel mechanic where he retired after 39 years.  Mr. Howell enjoyed being outdoors, riding his tractor, or mowing grass.  He always looked forward to planting a huge garden every year and sharing vegetables with friends and neighbors.  Mr. Howell loved to watch The Andy Griffith Show as well as going to the mountains and Dollywood (he even got to shake Dolly Parton’s hand on one trip!).  He was a member of Patterson Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and a member of the Faithful Followers Sunday school class.

He was a son of the late Harvey Allen & Lottie Lee Howell.  He was also preceded in death by father-in-law Junior Crawford; a sister, Irma Groover; and 7 brothers-in-law, Rothell Groover, Thurmond Groover, Allen Sapp, Terry Best, John White, Eugene Crawford, and Burt Peacock.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years; Judy Crawford Howell of Blackshear; his daughter and son-in-law, Becky & Nathan Griffin of Patterson; his two sons and daughters-in-law, James D. & Lori (Brasso) Howell, Jr. of West Palm Beach, FL and Brad & Kari Howell of Jacksonville, FL; 7 sisters, Carole Groover of Ellabell, Leola (Donald) Crawford of Pooler, Linda Sapp of Blackshear, Margie (Wayne) Hutchinson of Blackshear, Charlene Best of Pooler, Verdia White of Blackshear, and Sandra (Joe) Overstreet of Mershon; two brothers, Harvey Allen (Dorothea) Howell, Jr. of Centerview, MO, and Tommy Howell of Blackshear; his mother-in-law, Kathleen Crawford of Blackshear; 6 grandchildren, Kelsey Howell, Carter Howell, Natalee Griffin, Trent Griffin, Ryan Griffin, and Shane Brasso; great grandchildren Jackson Brasso and Tony Brasso; in-laws Anita (Larry) Norman, Jasper (Marie) Crawford, Mike (Tracie) Crawford all of Blackshear, Kathy (Scott) Rudd of Mount Vernon; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
