Iris Jean (Sweat) Mixon

Iris Jean Sweat Johnson Mixon—wife, mother, grandmother (“Mema”), and friend—died on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, following a brief illness. She was 83.

Iris Jean was born in 1937 to Archie and Betty Sweat. She was raised in the Forks of the Hurricane where she continued to call home all of her life. Iris Jean married Arnold Johnson with whom she welcomed her three boys-David, Daniel, & Mark. In 1983, Arnold passed unexpectedly. Iris Jean then married her husband of the last 35 Years, Bobby Mixon.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Arnold Mordant Johnson, a sister, Evelyn Sweat Smith, and a stepdaughter, Renee Mixon Fritz.

Iris Jean spent her working years devoting her time to King Edwards Cigar Factory, her father’s chicken farm, and later at D.L. Lee & Sons Meats until retirement. Iris Jean enjoyed singing with “The Cousins'' and was an active member of Beulah Baptist Church and the “Sunshine” Sunday School class. During her retirement, Iris Jean kept busy tending her seasonal garden, canning and preserving, shopping with friends, and caring for her grandchildren. Iris Jean will always be remembered for her quick wit with flawless timing, pocketsful of candy, and the never-ending supply of baked goods.

Iris Jean is survived by her loving husband, Bobby Mixon; her children, David Johnson, Daniel Johnson wife Patricia, and Mark Johnson all of the Forks of the Hurricane; her stepchildren, Tammy Clark of Dover, Delaware, and Kerry Mixon of Patterson; her grandchildren Heidi Moody (Kager), Lindsey Morgan (David), Aaron Johnson (Ashley), Jodi Johnson, Austin Johnson, LeeAnn Griner (Joseph), David Johnson, Dan Johnson, and Dawson Johnson; her great-grandchildren, Madison Morgan, Blythe Morgan, Raylon Griner, Ava Johnson, Maddox Johnson, Aerin Johnson; her sisters, Virginia Lewis, Sandra Crews (Lawton), and Carolyn Huggins; special family friend, Glenda Davis (Huey) and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, July 23rd from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Pearson Dial Funeral Home, in Blackshear, GA.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 24th, at 10:30 a.m. at Beulah Baptist Church with a burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Dan Johnson, Aaron Johnson, Austin Johnson, David Johnson, David Morgan, Joseph Griner, and Kager Moody.

The family request that members of the Beulah “Sunshine” Sunday School class serve as honorary pallbearers. They are asked to meet at the church at 10:00 a.m.
