Mrs. Gusta Maldeese “Deasy” Dixon Mattox, 80 of Blackshear, passed away Thursday morning, April 14, 2022, at the Baptist Village Nursing Home.
Born in Blackshear, Georgia on November 20, 1941, she had lived in Fernandina Beach, FL for a few years prior to moving back to Pierce County in the late 60’s. Mrs. Mattox was a 1959 graduate of Blackshear High School where she had been on the basketball team. Over the years she had worked for the egg plant in Blackshear, Schreiber’s Bootery, and American Home Patient before going to work with her husband at Gene Mattox Vault & Monument Company. She had spent the last several years as a homemaker. Mrs. Mattox was a member of Beulah Baptist Church where she was in the Sunshine Sunday school class, sang in the adult choir, and served as church secretary, as well as being very active in other church activities over the years. She enjoyed doing find-a-word puzzles along with other types of puzzles and working in her yard. In her younger days she had been very active with Recreation Department Softball.
She was a daughter of the late James Franklin & Sallie Roberson Dixon. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lawton Eugene “Gene” Mattox; two sisters, Ilean Baxter and Winlen Walker; and three brothers, Darthell Dixon, Ronnie Dixon, and Bronzal Dixon.
Survivors include her two children, Jeannie L. Johnson of Crestview, FL and Andy Mattox (Krystal Kimbrell) of Blackshear; a sister, Eula Dell Pearson of Blackshear; a brother, Edward “Shorty” (Bea) Dixon of Waycross; sisters-in-law, Sylvia Dixon of Tifton, Martha (Larry) Fowler of Loganville, and Mary Ann Stovall of Waycross; 5 grandchildren, Jaden Johnson, Saralyn Mattox, Elijah Mattox, Levi Mattox, and Noah (Rebecca) Jordan; 2 great grandchildren, Mason Jordan and Maggie Jordan; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Visitation for Mrs. Mattox will be held Friday evening, April 15, 2022, from 6 until 8 at the funeral home.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mattox will be held Saturday afternoon, April 16, 2022, at 3:00 o’clock from the Beulah Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Roberson officiating.
Interment will be in the Beulah Baptist Church cemetery with Rev. Matt Tuttle officiating.
Active pallbearers will be Mike Walker, Joey Walker, Steven Pearson, Elijah Mattox, Levi Mattox, and Noah Jordan.
