George Lloyd Smiley

Mr. George Lloyd Smiley, 65, of Blackshear, passed away late Tuesday afternoon, February 2, 2021, at Memorial Health, Jacksonville, Fl.

Born in Fort Pierce, Florida on May 14, 1955, he lived in Blackshear for most of his life. In 1982, he was hired by the Blackshear Police Department where George worked through the ranks. By 1993, he was appointed as the Chief of Police, where he served for 7 years. He retired as Chief of Police in 2000 and later that year returned to the Police Department serving as a Lieutenant. In 2007, he finally retired from the Blackshear Police Department for good. Within those years, he was a member of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police. Aside from his devotion as an officer and serving the community of Blackshear, Mr. Smiley loved painting different styles of art. One of his life’s enjoyments was his granddaughter, Kamryn. He enjoyed getting his hands dirty while working outside. George was a member at Emmanuel Baptist Church.

He was a son of the late George Chyler Smiley and Clarice Taylor Smiley. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Sherry Ann Cowart Smiley; and a sister, Wanda Sutherland.

Survivors include his son, Jason Smiley of Blackshear; a sister, Wynelle Harjula of Blackshear; a brother and sister-in-law; Lamar (Kathy) Smiley of Blackshear; a granddaughter, Kamryn Smiley; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services for Mr. Smiley will be held Friday afternoon, February 5, 2021, at 5:00pm, at Pearson-Dial Funeral Home Chapel.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Memorialization will be by cremation.

Past and present law enforcement personnel are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers, and should meet at the funeral home by 4:30pm Friday afternoon.
