Effie Walker Obituary

Beautician, businesswoman and homemaker Effie Mae Peacock Walker died Friday, August 7, 2020, on St. Simons Island, where she had made her home for the last 20 years.

Effie was originally from Blackshear, where she lived most of her life. She was the owner and operator for three decades of the Beauty Box, a hair salon in Blackshear, where she worked with hundreds of customers -- young and old and in between.

She and her late husband, Thomas W. Walker, wed on May 25, 1944, and were married 54 years.

Tom and Effie were parents to two daughters, Judy Walker Dixon, of St. Simons, and Janice Walker Corrigan (Stephen), of Savannah. Effie is survived by both daughters.

Tom and Effie and their daughters made homes on Alice Street near the Blackshear Hospital and later on Main Street across from the Pierce County Courthouse. It was behind the Alice Street home where Effie operated the Beauty Box for 30 years. Tom and Effie later sold the Main Street home and moved to Waycross. After Tom died, Effie moved to St. Simons to be closer to her elder daughter, Judy.

Effie was born Dec. 6, 1923, to Addie Henderson Peacock and William Mathew Peacock. Effie was preceded in death by both of her parents and siblings O. Roy Peacock, Ward Peacock, Pauline Sharpe, Fannie Kate Peacock, Mildred Walden and Catherine Bennett.

She was also preceded in death by her grandson Chad Dixon and son-in-law Steve Dixon.

Effie was a 1940 graduate of Blackshear High School. Her hobbies included crochet, crafts and plants. She was a member of the Blackshear Woman’s Club and a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Blackshear.

Effie is also survived by two granddaughters, Anna (Ed) Figueroa of St. Simons, and Addie Corrigan of Savannah; a grandson, Danny Corrigan of Savannah; great-grandchildren Davene Dixon, Gates Dixon and Wells Dixon of St. Simons; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
