Mr. Charles Edward “Eddie” Whitted, age 75 of Blackshear, passed away peacefully, Saturday, January 8, 2022, at the Hospice Satilla Hospice House with his wife by his side.
After graduating from Paxon High School in Jacksonville, FL, Class of 1965, he received a baseball scholarship to St. John’s Junior College. However, he was drafted to serve in Vietnam. When he returned from service in southeast Asia, he attended the University of Florida. Eddie had owned and operated B & W Door Company for several years.
Eddie was a member of First Baptist Church, Blackshear, Lakeview Golf Club, the Screven Masonic Lodge #368, and the Veterans Service Board in Atlanta. He was appointed and sworn in by Governor Nathan Deal and was re-appointed by Governor Brian Kemp. Eddie worked closely with Commissioners Pete Wheler, Mike Roby, and the newly elected commissioner, Col. USAF, Ret. Patricia Ross. He assisted countless veterans with their claims as well as their widows who were left behind not knowing what to do. Eddie will be missed by the veterans of Southeast Georgia for he was one of their strongest advocates.
Eddie was a son of the late William “Bill” & Lucille Thornton Whitted. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Whitted; and by a nephew, James Gregory Boyette.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda Chancey Whitted of Blackshear; his sister, Joan Boyette of Jesup; a first cousin who was more like a brother to him, Ron Reddish of Ocala, FL; nieces and nephews, Sandra B. Strickland of Jesup and Michael Whitted of Screven; William R. Riddle, Jr. (Susan) of Woodlands, TX, Barry Riddle (Jamie) of Screven, and Jade L. Chancey of Oakland, CA; and numerous great and great, great nieces and nephews; and several other relatives.
Funeral services for Eddie will be held Thursday afternoon, January 13, 2022, at 12:00 o’clock from the First Baptist Church in Blackshear.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Eddie will be laid to rest at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, GA.
Active pallbearers will be Billy Walker, Shelby Sweat, Frank Sweat, and Marion Gray who were his golfing buddies, James Starling, his childhood friend, and cousin, Ron Reddish.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Screven Masonic Lodge # 368 and the Vietnam Veterans Lodge #1070. All Vietnam Veterans are also invited to serve as honorary pallbearers.
All pallbearers are requested to meet at the church by 11:30 Thursday.
