Mrs. Jeane Allen Davis, 70 of Brantley County, passed away Monday (February 20, 2012) at the Hospice Satilla Hospice House.

Born in Alma, GA on March 31, 1941, she had lived in Brantley County for over 30 years.  Mrs. Davis had been a secretary at the State Lab in Waycross for many years attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints – Waycross Ward.  She loved to cook, garden, fish and in her younger days, bowl.  A loving mother and grandmother, Mrs. Davis helped to rear her youngest grandchild, Ashley Davis.

She was a daughter of the late Gus & Mamie Mobley Allen.  Mrs. Davis was also preceded in death by her husband, John Sapp; three sisters, Katie Taylor, Jesse Stewart and Ida Mae Matthews; and all three of her brothers, Wiley Allen, Earnest Allen and Leroy Allen.        

Survivors include a daughter, Tina Rutledge of Waycross; a son, Bruce Davis, girlfriend, Sheila Thomas, of Waycross; three sisters, Mamie (John) Wright of Acworth and Josephine (Robert) Cowart and Iva Lee Matthews all of Waycross; 5 grandchildren, Ashley Davis, Bruce Hardage, Elizabeth Hardage, James Bell and Cristy Rutledge; a great grandchild, Malaya Hardage and a great granddaughter soon to be born.  There are several nieces, nephews & other relatives.

Mrs. Mary Lou Thornton Ammons, 90 of Bristol, passed away early Sunday morning (February 19, 2012) at her residence.

Born in Offerman, GA on December 30, 1921, she had lived in Wayne County for many years before moving back to Pierce County in 1999.  Mrs. Ammons was a homemaker and was a devoted mother and grandmother.  She was a member of Ephesus Church of God where she was a Prayer Warrior.  Mrs. Ammons loved her church and serving her Lord.

She was a daughter of the late Omer & Lizzie Sinclair Thornton.  Mrs. Ammons was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence D. Ammons and all three of her brothers, Albert Thornton, Clyde Thornton and Willis Thornton.        

Survivors include six daughters, Maxine King and Mary Ann (Benny) Guest all of Offerman, Margie Smith and Melba (Jim) Byrd all of Bristol, Marie (Tracy) Thornton of Jesup, and Vicky (Keith) Bowen of Dublin; seven sons, David “Buddy” Ammons and Danny (Betty) Ammons all of Jesup, Paul Ammons and Donnie (Mary) Ammons all of Blackshear, Deryl (Gail) Ammons of Offerman, Joe (Brenda) Ammons of Wildwood, FL and Robert Ammons of Bristol; two sisters, Estelle Turner of Blackshear and Annette Odum of Offerman; 114 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews & other relatives.

Mr. Noah James Strickland, 73 of Blackshear, passed away Friday morning (February 17, 2012) at his residence.

Born in Patterson, GA on November 27, 1938, he had lived in Pierce County all of his life.  Mr. Strickland had worked as a truck driver for Foster Kimbrell for many years before going into law enforcement.  He started his law enforcement career as a Police Office for the Blackshear Police Department.  Mr. Strickland then went on the become a Deputy for the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department where he was later elected to the position of Sheriff, a job he held for 20 years.  Following his retirement from the Sheriff’s Department, Mr. Strickland continued on with service to the Pierce County by being elected to the Board of Commissioners where he served for three terms.  Mr. Strickland was working part-time with the Juvenile Justice Department before becoming ill.

An active man, Mr. Strickland loved to fish, coon hunt and work in his vegetable garden.  He was an avid reader, enjoyed woodworking and loved family gatherings.  He was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church and was a son of the late James Andrew & Josie Houston Strickland.  He was also preceded in death by a brother, Foye Strickland.       

Survivors include his wife, Earline Clark Strickland of Blackshear; a daughter, Angela Strickland, friend, Brenda Hearn, of Blackshear; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael & Ginger Strickland of Alma; a sister and brother-in-law, Gail & Lee Scurry of Blackshear; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jaurez & Vonice Strickland of Patterson and Charlie & Diane Strickland of Blackshear; a granddaughter, Tori Strickland of Blackshear; his mother-in-law, Lorene Clark of Blackshear and several nieces, nephews & other relatives.

Mrs. Kimberly Ann Bell Anderson, 26 of Patterson, passed away suddenly on Friday (February 17, 2012) at her residence.

Mrs. Anderson was born in Jacksonville, FL on March 26, 1985, where she lived before moving to Pierce County 12 years ago. Mrs. Anderson was a devoted mother who loved her children very much.  She was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan and she loved plants. She attended Living River Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her paternal Grandmother, Barbara Bell.       

Survivors include her husband, Rusty Anderson of Patterson; a daughter, Emily Leighann Anderson of Patterson, a son Dillion Judon Anderson of Patterson; her mother and step-father, Ruth Culver & Douglas Mixon of Blackshear; her father, David Bell of Jacksonville; a sister Nicole Bell of Jacksonville; two brothers, Robbie Bell of Jacksonville, and Doug Mixon of Blackshear; her maternal grandparents, Herman & Pat Culver of Jacksonville; her paternal grandparents, Joseph & Geraldine Bell; two nieces and other relatives.

Mrs. Jena Taleen Howell Tatum, 50 of Blackshear, passed away Thursday (February 16, 2012) at her mother’s residence following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Waycross, Georgia on October 15, 1961, Mrs. Tatum was a lifelong resident of Pierce County. She was a 1979 graduate of Blackshear High School and served in the United States Army. Mrs. Tatum enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Blackshear.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jack Reavis Howell, Sr., her step daughter, Amy Tatum and her sister, Tina Marie Howell.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Tatum of Blackshear; two daughters, Anna Nunn (husband Robert) and Karen Sheppard both of Blackshear; a son, Joe Sheppard of Blackshear; her mother, Vina Howell of Blackshear; a brother, Reavis Howell, Jr. (wife Melissa) of Douglasville; five grandchildren, Marissa Tatum, Hannah Nunn, Hunter Nunn, Riley Sheppard, Matt Smith; several nieces, nephews and numerous other relatives.

Mr. Glen Houston Harris, 61 of Blackshear, passed away Saturday (February 11, 2012) at his residence

Born in Screven, GA on November 18, 1950, he had lived in Pierce County all of his life.  He had worked as a Carman for CSX Transportation and had also done carpenter work.  Mr. Harris was a US Army veteran having served during the Vietnam conflict and was of the Baptist faith.  He was an avid bottle collector and loved to carve and fish. 

Mr. Harris was a son of the late Walter Lyman & Ola Mae Houston Harris. 

Survivors include a daughter, Stephanie Renee Stewart of Blackshear; two sons, Steven Ray Harris of Nahunta and Scott Harris of Blackshear; a sister, Peggie Harris of Blackshear; a brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie & Janis Harris of Blackshear; four grandchildren, Steven Ray Harris, II, Kayla Victoria Harris, Ollie Houston Harris and Courtney Madison Harris; a special friend, Ginger Vickers of Blackshear and several nieces, nephews & other relatives.

Mr. Harold Courson, 82 of Blackshear, passed away Saturday evening (February 4, 2012) at the Bacon County Hospital.

Born in Pierce County on June 16, 1929, he had lived in Pierce County most of his life.  He retired from Humphries Mining Company where he was a welder.  Mr. Courson had the distinction of building the door on the first manned space shuttle.  He was of the Baptist faith and loved to fish.

Mr. Courson was a son of the late Charles & Mary Jane Sapp Courson and was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Luke Courson and his only daughter, Willine Courson.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bobby & Carolyn Courson and James Courson all of Blackshear; two sisters, Ruby Crump and Elouise Courson both of Blackshear; five brothers and sisters-on-law, Herbert & Edith Courson, David & Shirley Courson and Dennis & Marty Courson all of Blackshear, J. Hugh & Betty Courson of Palatka, FL and John & Barbara Ann Courson of Brunswick; 4 grandchildren, Bobby James Courson, Johnny (Tricia) McBee, Jr., Russell Richard (Chasti) McBee and Samuel Wade Courson; 9 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews & other relatives.

Mrs. Sarah Evelyn Harris O’Steen, 97 of Blackshear, passed away Thursday afternoon (February 2, 2012) at the Baptist Village Nursing Home.

Born in Pierce County on February 1, 1915, she had lived in Pierce County all of her life.  Mrs. O’Steen was a homemaker, was a member of Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church and loved to fish.  She came from a family of 12 and married into a family of 12 and was considered the community nurse while growing up. 

Mrs. O’Steen was a daughter of the late Martin & Lela Tatum Harris.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hendry Joshua O’Steen, who passed away in 1987; a son-in-law, Bob Lairsey; and several brothers and sisters. 

Survivors include a daughter, J. Gwen Lairsey of Waycross; three sons and daughters-in-law, Harry D. & Carman O’Steen of Eulonia, Homer P. & Diane O’Steen of Shellman Bluff and Tommy M. & Gail O’Steen of Hoboken; a sister, Hazel Bell of Huntsville, AL; a brother, Arlen Harris of Nashville, TN; 23 grandchildren, Steven & Deitrah Lairsey, Donna & Dan Dixon, Dee Lairsey, Dawayne & Brandi King, Patrick King, Kanda King, Manuel O’Steen, Lupe O’Steen, Luz O’Steen, Erika O’Steen, Marisa O’Steen, John O’Steen, Jeff & Jackie O’Steen, Patricia O’Steen, Ariel O’steen, Edward & Kathy Lynn, Martin & Lisa Lynn, Rodney & Nikki Lynn, Jenny O’Steen, Joshua O’Steen, Lane & Kim Murphree, Brandon & Rebecca Murphree and Haley & David Garrett; 27 great grandchildren, 20 great, grandchildren; a special friend, James Leverett of Waycross and several nieces, nephews & other relatives.

Mr. Dan Allen Landon, 45 of Jesup, passed away early Saturday morning (January 28, 2012) from injuries he received in an automible accident in Offerman.

Born in Blackshear on September 28, 1966, he had lived in Pierce County all of his life.  He had worked for R & R Countertops in Screven and had been in the construction business for years.  Mr. Landon sang at weddings and funerals and was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Landon was a son of the late Ottis Landon, Jr.

Survivors include two sons, Brett Landon of Blackshear and Chance Landon of Waycross; his mother, Barbara “Bobbie” Cason Landon of Patterson; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Debra & Gomer Mansfield and Patricia & Jim Jones all of Patterson and Janet Peacock of Blackshear; his brother, Don Landon of Screven; a special friend, Maxine Baker of Jesup, and several nieces, nephews & other relatives.

Mrs. Betty Sue NeSmith Bragg, 84 of Patterson, passed away Thursday morning (January 26, 2012) at the Pierce County Nursing Home.

Born in Savannah, GA on October 29, 1927, Mrs. Bragg had lived in Savannah for many years before moving to Waycross in the early ‘70’s.  In the early ‘90’s she made Offerman her home.  Mrs. Bragg had worked for Belk Department Store for many years and had later worked for Woolco where she retired from the Notions Department as Manager.  She was a devout member of the Offerman Baptist Church where she was in The Reliables Sunday school class.    

Mrs. Bragg was a daughter of the late Wilton David & Effie Mozell NeSmith.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Palmer Bragg, her brother, William David NeSmith, and by a daughter-in-law, Dianne Williamson Bowers.

Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, David & Ginger Bowers of Roswell, GA, Ty & Dottie Bowers of Brunswick and Craig Bowers of Offerman; a step-daughter, Miriam Baker of Jacksonville, Fl; a step-son and step-daughter-in-law, William P., Jr. & Jennifer Bragg of Jacksonville, FL; two sisters, Fay Smith of Keystone Heights, FL and Lynn Estridge of Savannah; a sister-in-law, Joan NeSmith of Guyton; 13 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews & other relatives.
